Difference Between Megabyte & Megabit:

A megabyte (MB) and a megabit (Mb) are different things. Megabytes measure the size of files, arrays, and hard drives; whereas megabits measure Internet connection speeds. The confusion between these two units is widespread and unfortunately, there is not much being done to fix this.

However, it's pretty easy to remember that megs refers to storage space while Mb refers to connections, just think "B" for bits which makes sense if you know what bytes are. If it doesn't make any sense now then mb/s is easier to remember than Mbits/second even though technically they're both incorrect.

What is Bits & Byte?

Bits and Bytes: A byte is equal to 8 bits, no matter what anyone tells you.(8bits=1byte) In binary, a byte would be represented by two hexadecimal digits from 0 - 9 or A - F which we typically represent in decimal notation as 256 bytes(256B)=128Kb =64KB+32KB*2.

1 Kilobyte is 1000 bytes or 1024 bytes

1 Megabyte is 1,000,000 Bytes or 1,048,576 bytes (1024KB+256KB*2)

So How Does this Translate to MBps?

Let's do a little math: We are all familiar with the typical analog modem speed that we used back in the day of 14.4Kbps. In digital bit/s speeds, it would be roughly 5KB/s or about 0.005MB/s Gigabytes, and giga-bit s mean different things. Gigabyte has been adopted as a measurement unit for hard disk drives; hence GB=GigaByte and GBps = GigaBytes per Second.

1 Terabyte is 1000GB or 1,000,000 Megabytes (1000MBps)

Megabit per second (Mbps), when referring to data transfer speed is equal to 8 bits per second. A megabit (Mbit) is one million bits. It means that if you are receiving or sending data at 10Mbps, it's the same as 10Mb/s; however, it will be either 0.125MB/s or 1250KB/s respectively which means that they are not identical terms by a long shot, and in computer networking, they have different meanings entirely!

The term Mbps usually refers to the speed of your broadband connection while Mb stands for megabyte(MB). One Mb equals eight-bit, while the other Mb equals a thousand kilobytes or, in computer terms, 8Mb.

What's the difference in meaning between the terms megabytes and megabits?

When we measure broadband speed or data transfer speeds it's typically measured in megabits per second, not megabytes! To put this into perspective if you want to download a file of 10MB this would take10 minutes at a rate of 1MB/sec or 1 minute at a rate of 10Mbps (which is the same as 10Mb/s)
