At internet speed test sites, your internet connection's actual internet speed is to be measured. Internet speed test results provided by the internet service providers (ISP) will probably not match with internet speed tests done at internet speed test websites.

Why speed tests result different? Check 4 Reasons

These are four main reasons to explain why the internet speed tests are different

Reason 1: Latency Test Error

Latency or lag time in an internet connection is the time it takes for information to travel from one computer to another via a network. For example, if the latency between two cities in a country was 10ms, round trip times would take 20ms and while playing online games you would notice a slight delay when trying to play against other people who are located in different cities in that same country. On the contrary, if the latency changes to 100mbps, the internet connection can be deemed as fast internet.

As internet speed test websites use ping and/or packet loss to benchmark an internet connection's performance, latency can affect this measurement of internet speed. Test results usually show low internet speeds because of the above issue. While on certain ISP's, they provide consistently high internet speeds while being a victim of the latency problem at internet speed test sites.

Reason 2: Latency Test Error

If your internet service provider (ISP) is located close to you and if no other factors are present in between these two points i.e., ISP location and user locations, then there will be fewer problems with an internet connection since information travels faster over shorter distances compared to larger distances.

Reason 3: Bandwidth Limitations

Bandwidth is internet connectivity's capacity to transfer data. This includes the internet connection's ability to send and receive internet data such as video, sound, text etcetera at a certain time. When internet speed test sites use internet connections with higher bandwidths (usually 1 Mbps or more) then results will be much more accurate due to better internet speed result accuracy.

If an internet service provider only uses lower bandwidth service plans for their customers (like 256 kbps internet), then internet speed tests done on these kinds of internet connections can yield lower than actual internet speeds since they are not even close to the maximum potential throughput of the network.

Reason 4: Other Tiers

If internet speed test sites use internet connections with slower internet speeds (usually 256 kbps internet) then they are not even close to the maximum potential throughput of the network. If internet speed test sites use internet connections with higher internet speeds (usually 512 kbps internet) then results will be much more accurate due to better internet speed result accuracy.
